Applicable Models: Subaru Legacy, Impreza, and Forester (All Variants)
Before You Begin
Note:
The following procedure covers installation of the PDM Transmission Sleeve Kit (TSK) only.
It does not include removal of the transmission or installation of clutch components.
Refer to the appropriate OEM service manual for those procedures before beginning this installation.
Required Tools & Materials
- Solvent, carburetor cleaner, or brake cleaner
- Fine sandpaper, emery cloth, or Scotch-Brite™ pad
- Standard hand tools
- Medium-strength thread locker (e.g., Loctite® Blue 242)
- Supplied grease (included with kit)
Installation Steps
-
Remove OEM Components
Remove the original throw-out bearing and clutch fork from the transmission. -
Clean the Transmission Snout
Thoroughly clean the snout with solvent, carburetor cleaner, or brake cleaner to remove grease and debris. -
Inspect and Smooth the Surface
Use fine sandpaper, emery cloth, or a Scotch-Brite™ pad to smooth out any burrs or imperfections on the snout.
Clean again to ensure the surface is completely free of residue. -
Install the PDM Repair Sleeve
Slide the sleeve carefully over the transmission snout, positioning the set screws approximately 45° from the transmission case seam.
Ensure the rear shoulder of the sleeve seats firmly against the transmission case.Tip: A gentle tap on the sleeve’s shoulder may be needed to fully seat it.
Do not tap on the leading edge, as this can deform the sleeve or cause the bearing to bind. -
Secure the Sleeve
Apply a small amount of Loctite® to the set screw threads.
Tighten the screws evenly and carefully—do not overtighten, as this could crack the snout or distort the sleeve. -
Lubricate Contact Points
Apply the supplied grease to:
- The installed sleeve surface
- The internal groove of the new throw-out bearing
- The clutch fork pivot ball
-
Reinstall the Clutch Fork and Bearing
Attach the new throw-out bearing to the clutch fork by lightly squeezing the retainer clip and inserting it into the rear of the fork.
Reinstall the fork and bearing assembly into the transmission together. -
Final Step
Apply the provided PDM identification label to the right strut tower for future service reference.
Additional Note
Fork Clearance Check (Cable-Actuated Clutches Only):
Verify that the clutch fork pivot-ball clip clears the rear shoulder of the installed sleeve.
The clip may require bending to a slightly more acute angle for proper clearance.
Failure to adjust may result in a clicking noise when depressing the clutch pedal.
