Clutch Release Bearing Installation Notice

We have encountered instances of release bearing damage caused by improper installation, specifically cracking or failure of the plastic base. This is a known issue and is often related to installation technique.

With pull-style clutch systems, the release bearing must be installed onto the clutch fork first. After the engine and transmission are mated, the bearing will properly engage and snap into the pressure plate when the clutch is actuated.

A common point of confusion occurs during removal. When the transmission is separated, the release bearing typically remains attached to the pressure plate due to its locking mechanism. This can lead to the incorrect assumption that the bearing should be installed onto the pressure plate prior to reassembly.

This is incorrect.

If the release bearing is pre-installed onto the pressure plate before reinstalling the transmission, it may prevent proper alignment with the clutch fork. This misalignment can place excessive stress on the bearing, often resulting in damage to the plastic base.

To prevent damage:

  • Always install the release bearing onto the clutch fork first
  • Do not pre-install the bearing into the pressure plate
  • Allow the bearing to engage naturally during clutch operation after reassembly

Failure to follow proper installation procedures may result in premature bearing failure.
